It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude that we honor and remember our mentor and friend, Dr. Jim Hoskins. Jim passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 2, 2026, surrounded by his wife, Bobbi, and family. His absence is felt profoundly, but his presence remains constant in who we are and how we work. To us, Jim was never just a leader or an advisor—he was a trusted mentor, a steady voice of wisdom, and a true friend. He shaped our thinking, challenged our assumptions, and believed in our people with a conviction that changed lives. As we reflect on Jim’s life and legacy, we do so with love, respect, and a commitment to remember him always as the mentor and friend who helped make us better than we knew we could be.

Early Life and Family Roots

Jim grew up on a farm in Iowa, the son of parents who believed deeply in education, hard work, and the quiet dignity of doing your best. Their home was modest—they didn’t even have an indoor bathroom until Jim was in high school—but it was rich in love, books, games, and encouragement.

Jim’s childhood was defined by curiosity and exceptional academic ability. In the small country school he attended, he quickly advanced beyond his grade level, mastering the curriculum so early that his teacher assigned him a different task: read every book in the school library. Jim took the challenge to heart, absorbing seventh and eighth grade material while still in the early elementary years. The experience sparked a lifelong love of reading, learning, and intellectual exploration.

College offered Jim a pivotal turning point. He applied to and was accepted by the Air Force Academy, West Point, and the Naval Academy. He chose the Air Force Academy, a decision that would shape the arc of his life. It was also at the Academy where fate introduced him to the person who would become his lifelong partner—Bobbi.

Meeting the Love of His Life

Their love story started with a blind date in the Black Forest of Colorado Springs. Bobbi’s sister had backed out of a last minute date with an Air Force cadet, and Bobbi agreed to go in her place. She remembered her sister’s teasing remark as she dressed: “Try to look your best. Who knows, you might marry this man.”

Their connection was immediate, deep, and enduring. They married just days after Jim’s graduation from the Air Force Academy, beginning a shared journey marked by learning, partnership, and purpose.

Bobbi would later describe Jim as quick‑witted, generous, intellectually driven, and animated by a constant hunger for knowledge. He read every morning, brought new facts to breakfast, and filled their walks with ideas and stories. His love of learning, his humor, and his big heart made him not just a devoted husband but a cherished companion in every sense.

From the United States Air Force to a Second Calling

Jim began his professional life with 24 years of service in the US Air Force, working among elite teams, navigating high‑stakes responsibilities, and developing a leadership philosophy grounded in integrity, accountability, and perseverance. Over those years, he learned that a leader must never ask others to do what he isn’t willing to do himself, a principle he lived quite literally—he never left work before his people left work.

The Air Force ultimately nudged him toward his civilian future. The transition classes he attended encouraged service members to reflect on their strengths, interests, and potential. Jim’s test scores were off the charts—so high that the psychologist warned him they could indicate restlessness. People with his profile, he explained, often jump from job to job, searching for constant challenge.

Jim didn’t yet know it, but the world of market research—driven by complexity, curiosity, variation, and human insight—was waiting for him.

Joining Richard Wirthlin and the World of Values‑Driven Research

Jim’s introduction to market research was almost accidental. When a colleague showed him a Washington Post story about how research and polling helped shape political strategy, Jim thought, “Why don’t we get out and do that?” That curiosity led him to Richard Wirthlin and eventually to Wirthlin Worldwide.

At Wirthlin, Jim quickly became known for the depth of his values‑based work. One defining project involved nearly a thousand interviews exploring the values of Air Force recruits and influencers—work that continued even during moments of crisis. On September 11, 2001, Heart+Mind team members conducting interviews at Fort Bragg found themselves on a locked‑down base as special forces personnel mobilized. It became one of many moments illustrating how research intersects with real life, often unpredictably.

Lessons Learned About Leadership

Jim always said that integrity and the ability to get things done were the two most important qualities a leader can possess. Without them, he believed, not much of consequence can be accomplished. Over the course of his career, these principles shaped his relationships, his work, and the many people he mentored.

He pushed people—sometimes hard—not out of impatience, but out of belief. He saw potential before people saw it in themselves. He held high standards because he knew that excellence, once experienced, becomes a legacy that continues across teams and generations. “If you’re lucky enough to work in high performing units,” he said, “you learn what it means to be the best.”

He also recognized that leadership requires humility. Jim spoke candidly about learning the difficult art of delegation—letting people make mistakes, trusting them to grow, and resisting the urge to step in too quickly. As a self reliant perfectionist, he admitted that this was one of his hardest lessons.

Jim Hoskins: Ambassador of Excellence

After “retiring” from his career in market research, Jim joined his friends at Heart+Mind Strategies as an executive advisor and mentor. His philosophy was always the same: care about employees, care about clients, invest in people, and build with integrity. Everything else, he said, is up for grabs.

In 2017 Heart+Mind created the Jim Hoskins Ambassador of Excellence Award to honor the individual employees who exemplify Jim’s unwavering commitment to excellence. We give this award every few years to recognize a Heart+Mind employee who:

  • Demonstrates uncompromising standards
  • Holds the team accountable to principles and best practices
  • Seeks innovative approaches
  • Applies honesty—even the “brutal” kind—in pursuit of better outcomes
  • Delivers methodological rigor and undeniable quality

“I firmly believe that in life, you’re lucky if you get in groups that excel, because then you could start your own groups that excel, and pretty soon there is this heritage you get of excellence…the inherent belief that we can be excellent.”

A Final Tribute to Jim Hoskins

The legacy of Jim Hoskins cannot be reduced to a résumé, a list of accomplishments, or even the heartfelt stories of those fortunate enough to know him. His true legacy lives in the people he shaped—through his honesty, his intellect, his humor, his high standards, and his belief in excellence as both a discipline and a gift.

Jim taught us that excellence is not an act but a habit, something you practice until it becomes who you are. He reminded us that leadership is not about titles, but about showing up—early, consistently, and with integrity. He pushed us to think deeper, work smarter, and care more.

Most of all, Jim was a friend. He offered counsel, encouragement, and clarity when we needed it most. He laughed with us, challenged us, and guided us with a steady hand and an open heart. For that, we owe him more than words can express. To his beloved Bobbi, we offer our deepest condolences and our enduring gratitude. Thank you for sharing Jim with us. His presence shaped our company, our culture, and our lives. His fingerprints are everywhere and always will be.
